Heritage Consultant (Maternity Cover) – Colchester, Essex

The opportunity for a Heritage consultant based in Colchester to join a growing consultancy team and contribute to the management and conservation of exciting heritage sites across the UK.

Our client was founded in the 1940’s and has grown to over 250 people across 11 UK offices, and in this time has become an industry leader in architecture, heritage and masterplanning.

Sitting comfortably in the AJTop20 the practice provides sensitive restoration and repair schemes and contemporary design in historic contexts. The sectors they work in includes Cultural, Education, Ecclesiastical, Public, Hospitality, Residential and many more.

Due to the need for maternity cover, we are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Heritage Consultant to join the Colchester team.

Role & Responsibilities

  • To work as part of the regional team as well as the wider practice
  • To take responsibility for the successful management and efficient delivery of your project work, and managing contributions by other staff and sub-consultants
  • To provide heritage advice and guidance, undertake research and assessment of buildings and sites within the historic environment
  • To compose and contribute to various reports such as Conservation Management Plans, Historic Buildings Appraisals and Impact Assessments
  • A willingness to travel is essential as you will be supporting colleagues in the Cambridge and Norwich studios.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Archaeology, History, Art History or relevant field is a must, with Membership(s) of professional institutions, such as the IHBC being highly desirable
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are vital
  • Excellent skills and demonstrable experience of archival and desk-based research, on-site built fabric analysis and producing well-written reports
  • Experience of providing heritage advice
  • Experience of managing your own workload and running multiple simultaneous projects
  • Working knowledge of current English heritage legislation, policy and guidance
  • An ability to carry out desk-based archaeological assessments and use GIS (Geographical Information Systems) would be beneficial.
