Working alongside the London Borough of Croydon and Willmott Dixon, Hunter Dunning Client, HNW Architects has recently completed a substantial expansion project at Smitham Primary School, Coulsdon.
The Council’s Cabinet Committee approved the strategy at its meeting on 18 January 2016. The premise was to ensure sufficient school places were available to meet demand in the borough within three years.
Works included the provision of a new build classroom block, refurbishment of teaching accommodation and site-wide landscaping. The two-storey new build block consists of:
- 9 Classrooms
- 2 Specialist Activity Spaces
- a Nursery
- a Studio space to host community activities.
The concept was developed around the School’s vision to invigorate the school community around a new identity. The material palette which comprises red facing brickwork, standing seam steel and expressed timber cladding provides a new public face for the school and distinctive frontage to the development.
Smitham Primary School Headteacher, Mrs Sarah Garner said: “Recent building works have provided more pupil places and contributed hugely to a much improved and spacious learning environment.”
